How They Rule Us is a short blog entry by John Molyneux - a British Socialist. Here is an excerpt:
Capitalism, as we have seen, is a class divided society based on exploitation. Under capitalism a tiny highly privileged minority rules over the large majority and lives off their labour. How do they get away with it ?
The answer, as the Italian Marxist, Antonio Gramsci pointed out, is by a combination of force and consent. In reality force and consent are very closely intertwined and mutually reinforce each other, but for the moment I shall discuss them separately.

Missing the point
"Connecting the dots" has become a euphemism for scapegoating Arabs and Muslims across the world for war and global insecurity. Tracking the Threat does a good job of distracting us from the real dangers that face us: nuclear war, global warming, and a war which is led by the wealthiest nation on the poor of the world in the name of 'fighting terrorism.'

Horde of Directors
Horde of Directors is an innovative use of the They Rule data by Ian Bogost and T. Michael Keesey. It's a game! Here is the decription from the website: Horde of Directors puts the player in the role of an activist trying to advance a social agenda in the complex world of interrelated corporate and government interests. By creating simplified experience of corporate interconnectedness, the game embodies the challenges of overcoming corporate and government nepotism in the name of social causes.

Download the They Rule Database
I have put up the they rule database for people to download. Perhaps someone can make an interface to keep this up to date in some sort of collaborative fashion. Please let me know if you do something with this data. It is probably best that you put a disclaimer on the data - as it will have some errors in there and it will date. Amy Balkin and I collated it earlier in 2004 from the top 500 US corporate websites - and we have included the URLs of the pages on which we found the info. This should make it easier for people to keep up to date. If someone does keep it up to date - please let us plug in a they rule front end into your dataset! Presently, it is in SQL format, and I think the structure needs some work. It might make more sense to break out the connections between the directors and the companies (and institutions) into a seperate connections table.

Exxon vs. the Environment
Amy Balkin and I, recently helped to make this website for Greenpeace. The information is detailed and condemning.
Exxon Secrets is the first chapter of a larger Greenpeace project provide a research database of information on the corporate funded anti-environmental movement.
The database compiles Exxon Foundation funding to a series of institutions who have worked to undermine solutions to global warming and climate change in recent years. Individuals working with these organizations and their global warming quotes and deeds are detailed. There are downloadable source documents or links to sources are provided throughout.

End the Occupation - Bring the Troops Home NOW!
I will be giving a talk on Wednesday May 12 at 7pm at the International Socialist Organization in San Francisco:
110 Capp Street, 2nd Floor (between 16th and 17th Streets). It will not be about They Rule - but it is definitely related! It will be about why the war in Iraq was wrong, why it happened and how we can continue to build the movement that demands that it stops.
